I knew there was something that bothered me about the hymn (and I use the term loosely) "Take and Eat", which someone I know recently breathlessly informed me is now her most favoritest hymn EVER. Go here and read the whole thing, then come back. I'll wait.

It would probably help my non-Catholic readers if there were mp3 files of those hymns somewhere (because the melodies are just as insipid as the words, but based on what you read, do you sing that kind of stuff at your Mass? If you're not Catholic, what hymns to you sing? Does anyone sing hymns like "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name", "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence", and "The Old Rugged Cross" anymore?
What are people singing in church nowadays?
Please pray for a young woman who is pregnant. I don't know her name, but I read an anonymous post today in which this woman posted that she is regretting her pregnancy, her fiance' is inconsiderate and just a not very nice guy, and she is thinking of "faking a miscarriage and visiting PP." So she needs our prayers! Thanks.

There was a surprising amount of commentary out there on that particular hymn, that I found when I googled the title.

I had never heard of any of those hymns, but I've always disliked songs with that sort of perspective. We should be coming to Him with the admission that without Him we are nothing, that we are desperate for Him, that it is a joy to be in His presence, that we aren't looking for blessings; all we want is Him. These are the themes of most of the songs we sing in my church (multi-denominational, about 40% Catholic attenders). We usually sing more upbeat songs, or choruses that are easier to remember and sing from the heart than some hymns(no offense meant to folks who prefer hymns). We do sing some hymns; we sang The Old Rugged Cross a few weeks ago, and we sang The Solid Rock last week as part of a live worship recording. Our choir director, worship leader and pastor are insistent on all or most of our songs being "prayers from our hearts to God's", so they are very particular about what they choose.

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I play/sing for a monthly pro life mass ( we will also offer our mass for her) and we get to choose (yay) the music. Here is what we are doing this Saturday-1.O Sacred Hear Surrounded, 2.Shepherd Me O God, 3. (this is my fave of the lot) Be Thou My Vision (with a little flute added) #4 is always the Lady of Guadalupe song--has to be,--their rule, Nice message, but poor melody and lyrics. Oh well 3 out of 4 isn't bad. Our home parish does o-kay songs, but not in a way that is very conducive to singing along with. long story :P

ReplyDeleteI haven't heard Be Thou My Vision in a long time; it's one of my favorite hymns. We used to sing that a lot when I was growing up.
